Kitchen Garden - Friend or Foe?
These activities are designed to awaken students’ curiosity about the insects in their garden and to realise that not all insects are pests. Activities include making a bug catcher to observe insects more closely and using "environmentally friendly" garden sprays to deter insects that are attacking garden plants. Lessons are linked to the Australian Curriculum for Year 4 Science.
Tomato Trouble: What's going on in the garden?
A pdf unit plan written for Year 4 students in New Jersey. This unit is an inquiry which asks students to determine which garden pest might be attacking the tomato plants in a garden. Lesson 1 would be a useful supplement to the Explore phase of this unit and includes a worksheet with word search for parts of a flower (p10).
Science World: Pollinators
A pdf sequence of lesson plans and activities that demonstrates pollination concepts through games and simulations. The Drinking Nectar lesson would be a good opportunity to look at comparing lengths, fractions and ratios.
The Classroom Bookshelf: The Case of the Vanishing Honeybees
This website contains ideas about using the book: The Case of the Vanishing Honeybees by Sandra Markle in the classroom. Some of these ideas could be useful with similar texts if this book is not available.

Mystery of the disappearing bees
This amateur video shows two young girls riding through the countryside noticing the lack of bees, butterflies and flowers. There is information text included in the notes. This appears to be one person's attempt to raise awareness of the issue, and could be used as a model for students' projects. Students could consider how this visual text could be made more engaging and how the message could be made clearer to the audience. |
